Title Design Research Thriller: Se7en

This film's opening sequence example was found on artofthetitle.com.

  1. 1. How many titles are displayed during the opening sequences to the film? Which ones?

51 titles were displayed in total during the opening scene. This included the name of the production companies and of the producer and executive producers along with their co-producers and co-executive producers. This also includes the names of the main actors, casting directors, music producers, costume designers, editor, writer, and director.

  1. 2. What images are prioritized in the opening sequence?

The images prioritized in this opening scene are images of books, notebooks, and the characters' fingers. They use extreme close up as the character cuts and pastes things onto a notebook and sews it up.

  1. 3. What connotations do these images carry?

The connotation with these images is suspicious. They make you feel skeptical, in a way. The use of older and broken-looking tools as well as the dirty makeup on the hair and fingernails adds suspicion as well as a little bit of wildness.

  1. 4. How does the film establish a feeling of the genre from the outset?

It builds up tension and gives the feeling that action and suspense will be frequent in this movie, as is common in a thriller.

  1. 5. What strategies are used to ensure the film appeals to its target audience?

People who specifically like thriller movies will be drawn in by the original suspense, including the music and acting.

  1. 6. How has technology been used effectively? You want to consider camera angles, transitions and editing techniques.

In the opening title scene, an extreme close up was used throughout, as well as very quick fade-in/ fade-out and editing techniques to make the letters for the titles shaky and blurry/dizzy.
