Title Design Research Thriller: Splice

  1. 1. How many titles are displayed during the opening sequences to the film? Which ones? 

10 titles were displayed in total during the opening sequence of the film. This included the film director, opening title sequence, visual effects, visual effects supervisor, visual effects producer, modeler and texture artist, digital FX artist, lighting compositing, camera and animation, and layout and 3D artist.  

  1. 2. What images are prioritized in the opening sequence? 

The images prioritized in the opening sequence are pictures of x-rays for different types of animals. Then it moves on to some type of fluid-filled womb, with certain titles virtually attached to the interior walls like a cancerous growth. The walls itself seem to be composed of various forms of biological materials – mammalian, reptile, and even plant-like. 

  1. 3. What connotations do these images carry? 

The images carry a creepy and dark connotation. Throughout the entirety of the title sequence, the lighting was very dark and dim, making it even more suspenseful than it already is. In the beginning it shows you some images of x-rays for different species of animals and then it moves on to showing some of the titles pushing up from under the skin. This supports the creepier aspect to this opening sequence 

  1. 4. How does the film establish a feeling of the genre from the outset? 

It gives aspects of a thriller film throughout the entire opening sequence. Making viewers feel the suspense through the screen by dimming the lighting and using horror/thriller aspects with the titles pushing up from underneath mammalian, reptilian, and plant-like skin.  

  1. 5. What strategies are used to ensure the film appeals to its target audience? 

People who like thrillers and horror movies would be interested in this as from the beginning it starts off with elements that create tension and suspense. The background music is very creepy as there are added elements of sound of going through some type of fluid or water. The special effects would also reach the target audience as it was very well done.  

  1. 6. How has technology been used effectively? You want to consider camera angles, transitions and editing techniques. 

3D, Digital Fusion (for editing), Photoshop, and After Effects were all used. The sequence was put into an amniotic liquid so that it would seem to look as if it would be floating as it moves from scene to scene. They also create a rather delicate depth-of-field effect to increase realism and give the developing particles a pleasant foggy look.

Difficulties in the Production Process

Throughout the long process of filming and editing I come across a lot of hardships. From the start of filming, there were already a lot of difficulties. This included the search for a set to film at. There were many places that my partner and I wanted to film at, however most of them didn't allow it. The first option that was on the table was an abandoned house that was on the beach as this would be the most realistic. This ended up not being a good set because it was not there anymore. Then my friend offered her dads parking garage, but I did not think the scenery matched the story very well. Finally, the Galleria Mall was the final set and permission was granted to film in this place. Also, finding a place for the beginning of the opening sequence was very difficult as filming could not take place at the school I go to. Final Touches (editing)

 The next day all of editing was completed. They both sent me the clips they each edited and I looked them over to make sure they were good and ready to be all put together. The finished products were gathered and sent to Ashley's phone. Then Ashley put all of them together. Aja and Ashley both edited the clips together in their respected order. I was in charge of the order all of the clips went in since I was the one who made up the theme of this music video. I also was the one who made the storyboard so it made sense that I was in charge of the organization. The footage was collected in the editing software app iMovie. I added some commentary in some clips that needed some work. I told them when I thought a clip had to be sped up, shortened, and elongated. After this I had thought that the video had looked great. Filming Day at the Beach

On Thursday, December 2nd I started filming with my group. Finding days to start the filming process was extremely difficult for my group. I have work on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights. So, my group  and I could not film the sunset at the beach on the weekend. Aja has volunteer work on Monday and Wednesday, and work on Friday. Ashley has to go on Tuesday's to Lacrosse practice and works on Wednesday's. With my schedule I could have filmed any day during Monday-Thursday. However, my other team members had the exact opposite schedule from me. On the weekend I only had Saturday and Sunday mornings available. My group and I decided to film the sunset at the beach on Thursday as that was the only night everyone had available.
