Creative Critical Reflection
1. 1. How does your product use or challenge conventions AND how does
it represent social groups or issues?
Nike is a product that has challenged conventions many times. Some may think this product is just used for people who are athletes and men, as they are used mostly for their advertisements. However, Nike isn’t just limited to these opinions, they aspire to bring inspiration and innovation to every athlete in the world. They have also mentioned that anyone is an athlete if they have a body. Nike is focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion. To address racial inequality for Black Americans they invested over 10 years to have earned $140 million. They also have a Until We All Win community investment program. Through this they earned $5 million dollars per year going towards nonprofits that work to advance equality in places all throughout North America. They supported many individuals including Asian Americans, Middle East and Pacific Islander communities, the Black community, the Latinx community, the military and veteran’s communities, the Native American and Indigenous communities, the LGBTQIA+ community, and girls and women.
2. How does your product engage with audiences AND how would it be distributed as a real media text?
One thing that Nike is really good at is engaging their customers/audiences.
By using internet Nike has been growing very rapidly with promoting their products.
To connect with everyone on a global scale they use social media platforms
including Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. Also, they grab many people’s
attention by the use of many famous influencers including people like Michael Jordan,
Cristiano Ronaldo, Serena Williams, etc. Nike has a very dominant online
present as they post daily their products, which is likely to be shared, liked,
and commented on by many of their followers. One really effective way they
engage with their audience is by a post where every follower can share a picture
of them wearing their favorite Nike product. This can then be featured on Nike’s
feed or wall.
3. 3. How did your production skills develop throughout this project?
My production skills have developed a lot throughout this project. In the
beginning I didn’t know how to shoot anything. I wasn’t really one that was
interested in being in pictures/videos, or filming anything. This class and project
was a way for me to step out of my comfort zone and try something that I actually
find fun and interesting now. I have learned about many new ways of shooting
videos and how hard and focused you have to be to do it. I learned how to do
things like a tracking shot and close up shot. I also learned how to make a
commercial. For this commercial it had to be short so all the clips you shot
had to be good. There was a lot of re-filming involved for this commercial. In my
opinion, I think my skills have improved a lot since I knew nothing when I started
this.
4. How did you
integrate technologies – software, hardware and online – in this project?
For the filming,
my partner and I used my iPhone 12 pro to film the shots. After the filming process
was over my partner used the software application iMovie to edit the clips. This
was the best application to use as it was the easiest way to edit the commercial.
To find a song for the background music, the application YouTube and Spotify
were used. They are assessable to everyone, and it is very simple to use. To organize
the process for this project, the desktop application Blogger was used. Lastly,
the application Canvas online was used to keep track of deadlines and filming tips.
